for a band that had such a long road to becoming the band they are today, the national have, in the past four years, become the band they had always wanted to be. on sleep well beast, they achieved their dream of becoming mainstream, something they had always wanted to do. and they did it by way of a perfectly constructed album. which is why it is the most important album the national have made.

sleep well beast is my favorite album, and i think everyone who reads this will agree, but there are dozens of albums i could have chosen. so instead, for a little while, i thought i would shine a spotlight on some of the albums that made me fall in love with the national. some of them are by the band, while others are by some of my favorite artists who have covered the national. i realize that some of these albums may seem a little frivolous, but i hope you enjoy them nonetheless.

the national, tom berningers 1994 solo album the feast of love, is where it all started. it may seem a little strange to include the national in an album history of a truly solo work. but the truth is that the national as a band were always more of a side project to tom berningers solo work than they were a band. in 1994, when the feast of love came out, he and bryce dessner were in their early 20s and they were still doing college radio and playing college venues. their sound had not yet become the mix of alt-country and folk-pop that would come to define them. so of course, tom berninger was going to put out an album of piano-driven songs that sound like the national. and in many ways, it was. but it was also a more mature sound than anything the band had produced up to that point. this is the album that i would listen to while i waited for the band to finally release alligator in 1999.

Julian Lynch, who was the co-founder of the band and has long been a key member of The National, said: Graceland is important because it reflects the journey this band has gone on and the lessons theyve learnt along the way. This record was made in our “spare time” when weve started having kids, which has happened in the last couple of years, so we made it as a family and I think it has a different spirit and energy than our previous albums which were more complicated songs. It was a test of our mettle to make something as simple as this record and not sound like a flippant parody of pop music. I think “Bitches Brew” was probably the single most liberating experience in the band. It was the first time that the songs we were writing were just so good. You know when you have a good song but you just dont do anything with it? For Graceland, we were very fortunate that we got the time and the money to make a proper album that wasnt rushed.. I always saw it as a return to pop records. People ask if we have changed genres or had a pop turn, but I think that was almost a subconscious thing as we wanted to have a kind of clarity in our songwriting again. There was a certain amount of controversy around the subject matter, but that washes away when you listen to the record. Your brain wires up and its like, “that’s a really great song.”
Rachael Crowther, who has since left The National, said: Graceland felt like an exercise and a test to see if we could produce something of value. I think the record represents a clear development in our songwriting, our sound, and the more organic sound of our time in the studio. It feels like The National where, on our first couple of records, we were still struggling to find our way in a sound, and on Alligator, there was a slicker, more pop sound.
