this is something that takes some getting used to. normally, games will give you a map and if you want to do anything out of the way, youll be told exactly where to go and what to do. this was nowhere to be found in resident evil 4 vr. youre told that theres a vending machine in a nearby room that you can use to buy health and ammo, but youre never told how to get there, and its clear that theres a lot of back-tracking that youll need to do.
survival mode isnt hard at all, however. the game is almost entirely luck based, with the only real decision you have to make being the choice of which of the three character types to play as. if you choose a merc, you can sneak past guards and use your knife to kill them when theyre not looking. if you choose the zombie-killer, you can run around and bash the zombies with your knife. if you choose the old-school resident, you can run around and shoot the zombies and guards when theyre not looking. all of these options, and more, will ensure that your experience is varied.
no matter how hard the game tries to imitate resident evil 4s more authentic feel, it remains a mostly competent experience. and thats enough to make you want to play it again, in spite of all the rough edges and bugs that impede your progress. when you get past the initial scare, you have a great single-player experience with a story that actually goes somewhere. the games colorful visuals are vibrant and the soundtrack is enjoyable, but itll take a lot of trial and error to get everything working just right. its a good, if not great, game that does a lot right. its just too bad that its a little too rough around the edges.
the aiming is smooth and intuitive, and it took me no time to feel right at home once the novelty of teleportation wore off. theres also a new crosshair in the game, which is perfectly serviceable even if it isnt as detailed as the one on the psvr. although the gun aiming in resident evil 4 vr was outstanding, it wasnt as detailed or as easy to use. in resident evil 4, you could simply aim using the analog stick, which was perfect. with the quest 2, the game is able to take the frame rate into account as well, and so shooting enemies was more accurate. there are only two modes of aiming: automatic, and manual. you can also zoom in and out using the right stick.
that said, youll probably be aiming with your analog stick anyway so you dont need the motion controls, and in many cases its just easier to move forward, pull the trigger, and move backward a little. for those of you who enjoy a good old-fashioned, story-based survival horror experience, theres nothing more satisfying than seeing a victim of ganado bloodlust pounce on the screen, crawl up your body, and then disembowel you. theres also a new graphics filter, which you can toggle on in the game settings. i found it added a bit of a new moody vibe, but not enough to detract from the original resident evil 4 style visuals. theres also a new ticker system, which shows the current status of all your character health. you can also now look through doorways and use the motion controls to turn on and off any lamps in the room. i was grateful for this, as i was to discover later that this would be my method of survival.
