nier:automata playable again now that a new crack has been released. not quite as good as the gold edition, but still decent. it’s like playing two different games. there’s the original game with its wooden floors and minutiae of difficulty, and then there’s the far mod (fix automata resolution) which lets you access features normally unavailable to players on your device. the far mod also fixes bugs like the game crashing after the introduction sequence, the game stops responding in certain circumstances, the game has blank sectors on the hard drive, and continues to crash once the game has been cleared.

it’s said that just as a hammer can break a stone, far can bring light to darkness. like that legendary figure who’s heralded as a second buddha, who’s long been associated with the figure who predicted the date of nier:automata release on the official forums, this far mod (which is essentially a crack and easy fix) is a difficult and often painful process. but like the legend of the buddha, it may serve to provide the final word.

the dialogue is also pretty standard fare for nier. youve gotta complete challenges or sidequests, and here theres a fairly standard series of tasks to complete. theres a cell quest which starts with you hearing a cry from a cell and then you finding this out, and as you progress you eventually beat this guy up so theres some satisfaction at the end of that, then there’s this out of place bounty hunter quest, followed by a capture the girl mission in a pub. then there’s a separate gameplay part where you have to fight a boss, which are always a delight no matter how many times youve done them already in the campaign.
that bar is also the reason why there’s a lot of repetition in the game. first you have to get the letter to open the safe, then you have to open the safe with the letter, then you have to get the money, then you have to steal the money, and so on.
the game does repeat itself, but there are slight differences between each side mission that do distinguish themselves. here you fight a thug boss, and you can choose from four different attacks. a hook kick, a knockout punch, a leg whip, or a grab. its a pretty simple combat system, and while theres some parts of it that get pretty repetitive it never really gets too annoying.
theres a few optional things you can do like put gems into the newspaper, which only money can buy, but its usually just a straight puzzle like youve seen already. the objective of the puzzle is to get the gem into a square on the page, and then click on it to progress the level and earn money.
there’s also a story page, where you unlock interesting details about the planet youre on, which is pretty cool. it does probably make more sense to buy these gems if you’re that way inclined, but all you have to do is click the page to progress the level anyway, which you can tell when the page scrolls in from the left.
