I have ADHD and some of the symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome – traits of social impairment.

Please keep in mind that when I say ADHD, I’m NOT saying that I’m ‘hyperactive’. I’m just not all that socially functional as a grown-up with many of the traits of the disorders.

I’m an Adult (I’m a 33 year old grown up) with ADHD.

As a child, my Social Autism traits showed clearly as a child. I didn’t even know I had these traits, I only knew that I didn’t like social stuff and when I did it, I preferred self-stimulating or doing my homework.

I didn’t even know I was missing out on “a social part of life.” I didn’t even know this part was social. I just thought of it as “school stuff” because that’s all I was taught to do, the “school stuff.” I wasn’t even taught I had a different “learnin’ style,” to properly address the problem.

I only figured out this was social when a teacher said it would help my grades by giving me a sense of responsibility in class. I thought, “huh?” I had never had any sense of responsibility before. “I was just not able to learn at my level as a ‘normal kid’ though. I still couldn’t do my homework. I just couldn’t.

I don’t know what it would have looked like if I’d been diagnosed with Social Autism.

I’m guessing that I’d have problems with the “structured social activities.” I think I’d probably have problems with “small-talk” and group interactions.

I’m not sure how it would have affected me.

But it’s not
