in 1901, bell filed a petition with the department of justice to block at&ts entry into boston and new york city. the doj refused to act on this petition for a reason that would soon come to be a common theme for bell – they had no monopoly. there had been no finding of a monopoly.

the real invisible hand at work, of course, was the market. the head of the company that made the patented component the engineer needed couldnt risk losing this contract. so he offered it to the inventor at half his usual price, in a dimly lit room at the back of a warehouse, and told him that he would have to supply the design within a week. a couple of days later, the mailing label on the finished product showed the company stamped not on the working end of the component, but on the box that protected it, and the entire package was registered in a couple of one-line slips of paper, which he promptly dumped into the wastebasket.
