Listening to this view piece by The Guardian, narrated by Clive James who mentions a report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on a “Sociological study of religion”. Most of us have a similar idea in our heads of what religion is but the report from the OECD says that religion is “a crucial part of life and therefore needs to be discussed as a unique social phenomenon by its own right”.

If we take religion in a general sense, in the abstract, then we all agree. If we look at social science in a wider sense, sociology, for example, the study of religion is an area of study. Sociologists study religion in its cultural, social and historical contexts, of course, and use concepts drawn from both sociology and anthropology, but sociologists study religion to examine the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of religion. The purpose of this isn’t to do away with religion or try to define it, but to understand it better.

The OECD report is a fascinating read and could be re-written as a book. But it does raise some interesting points.
