we’re into the home stretch of the first season, but with the end of this season we’ll be tuning in for the long haul, and it looks like we’re in for a lot of action and a lot of drama as the series rolls right along for the long haul.
at this point, harrison served as the series’ version of dexter’s dick cheney, remaining loyal to and protective of dexter, but also warmly respectful to dexter for all that he’d come to mean to him over the years. harrison was just one stop down the road in his long road to becoming the mentor dexter needs, but the way he was treated in new blood made him seem less like a future better fit for dexter and more like a cautious liaison, who’s in charge but not in charge.
dexter was introduced again in a shadowy, ambiguous fashion here, sort of like he was recast, only not as prominently and distinctly. in that context, it makes more sense why he focused more on his flawed, yet mostly sound, attraction to his much younger neighbor, lila (played by non-actress elizabeth gillies). dexter’s emotions were trickier here; lila was someone who probably could’ve been a substitute for rita, and so we saw dexter through her eyes more than he ever has. one of the best moments in the whole series, especially for this episode, is a rough-faced, nonplussed dexter driving lila away from the door while she cowers and begs for just one more chance — which is taken from the season 2 “where there’s smoke” episode, where dexter drove rita away from him after accidentally shooting her husband. this is a pure reminder of why lila was and is such a bad choice for dexter to get involved with. dexter and lila’s relationship, while never really a true partnership, carried over into the next few seasons where it was captured in the shape of nadia’s daughter debra (who lila stood to inherit). sadly, it was in trying to mold deb’s life into what he wanted that dexter drove away the only real family member he’d ever had.
the only real problem with these blu-rays is their age. when i was asked to fill in for the ‘dexter’ reviewer, i asked my local netflix to offer me a set from their temporary library. after only a couple of months, they came back with a dvd which they mistakenly sent me. this eventually got returned to them, and while it was in the hands of the post office it was lost. i had to borrow a dvd from my sister (who’s in canada and not on-demand) and on top of that this was a region-free set, meaning that it wasn’t dubbed. finally, my review arrived, and, after trying to eliminate any issues that had been present in the american blu-ray version, i was given a ‘dexter 2-disc collector’s edition’ which offers every single episode on a single disc. the main problem in the american version was the sound, which was mixed weirdly and wasn’t particularly deep in the front. this was rectified with the transfer, but that also meant that the extras were not in high quality. this is not the case here, however. these discs offer the same high-def picture (again) and sound (also great), but have enhanced and additional extras as well as a revised set of extras from the previous region-free ‘dexter’ set. for me, the sound on this disc is more than enough of an improvement over the previous set. the only real difference is that the ‘final chapter’ commentaries aren’t included. this isn’t anything, however, that is reason to skip it, and if you’re like me, you’re just going to want this set anyway, regardless of the commentaries being gone.
with a new city, new school, new issues and so on, dexter’s corner of miami has changed mightily from the early seasons of the show, and that’s a positive, one that helps to flesh out the new character and make his backstories that much more relevant and meaningful. and even with all the new faces, we still have the same old dexter, and that’s a good thing since this is a show that is constantly evolving in its thematic approach and thus it only makes sense that dexter should continue to grow as a character. as for the new blood, i think that they’re all going to be amazing little compacts of showbiz, and it’s great to see more of these young up and coming actors, like david zayas, alexa davalos, jordi mollà and benito martinez among others, getting to shine.
