If the end goal of life is to achieve self-actualisation and you believe that Bon Jovi are worthy of emulating, then This Ain’t My Home could be the answer. With a tune that sounds like it’s penned by Springsteen on a hallucinogenic trip, it’s a visual ode to the pain and emptiness of being in a city you didn’t choose, a tough sell on the strength of the vocals alone.

“I felt a little bit bad about those comments. I felt like a little bit of a troll for the comments because we’re not really into the whole politics and what’s going on these days, and I’m not really a political person. But I will tell you one thing, it was clear to me at the time that it wasn’t a song about [my] personal life, it was a song about [my] life on tour, because it’s really about the 24/7 lifestyle that I was living on tour. A lot of people don’t really understand that…. So I’m glad that I can get back to the fans and say, ‘Hey, it wasn’t about me’ and take it as a good thing and people were writing some really good things about it. I just wasn’t expecting them to be so honest.”

Piano Man, with its music-box theme and fast-paced lyrics, spoke of the loneliness and longing of former lovers and friends. It’s a ballad with a soulful quality that some have suggested is strongly reminiscent of Sun City Girls’ The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It’s a standout track from the man known as the leader of the New York Bon Jovi, especially during the latter portions of the song.

In 2007, our test of Bon Jovi’s own version of A Day in the Life on a recording with no problems yielded two left-right sides, a top and a base, and a master track and four single-channel output tracks. So, our test was perfect. We didn’t need to add any parts or plug-ins.

Bon Jovi’s classic song recounts an ultra-affectionate relationship, but there’s no denying that the members of Bon Jovi’s band were still moving through a very different world from the one in which they were raised. The song was recorded at a time when a country-rock track like this would never have been considered radio-friendly or sold in huge quantities. Turns out, though, that the power of that strong song writing can overcome such factors as dwindling radio airplay and jaded music executives.
Elsewhere, we have the band’s very ’80s rock anthem, Hovi the Hawk, in which Bon Jovi show he is a serious entertainer to these ears. A gentle entry, it soon escalates as the track becomes an electric guitar showcase.
Even from the beginning, we have some good gems, such as The Weight. It’s one of the nastier songs the band have come out with, almost taking the edge off their mainstream show business image. Sure, you could accuse Bon Jovi of being a band who indulge in the politest of rock and roll clichés, but we know what we’re in for when the band plays onstage.
Weird Man is one of the few Bon Jovi songs that doesn’t seem to fit their usual approach of the amicable and light-hearted. The title track off their first English album The New Defector, it begins with the introspective contemplation of the narrator and his situation, but it’s almost immediately steered by heavy guitars and a general sense of desperation, that perhaps you don’t wanna rock this man’s world.
Peeling off the invoices, we have a trio of covers, with Bon Jovi taking on The Kinks’ great romantic ballad The Wait, the Cure’s goth-styled Where Do the Children Go, and The Beatles’ You’re Going to Lose That Girl. While The Wait comes off pretty ballad-ish, the others demand a dose of ear-shredding rock & roll. So you can expect to get something a bit odd (and loud!) from the opposite end of the spectrum.
