Adding two relative variables

What is the correct method for adding two relative variables? Like, if a has a size of 1.5cm and b has a size of 2cm, what is the correct way to get c’s size to be 3cm?

The standard solution to this is:
a + b + (a + b) / 2

I know it’s a mouthful, but it’s the correct way. It doesn’t assume any arithmetic between the a’s and b’s (even though that’s what it looks like). You should use it.

This is what you want.
((a + b) / 2) + b

Now, a + b can be either bigger or smaller than 2cm and b can either be bigger or smaller than 1.5cm. Then you divide the sum of a and b by 2 and add on b again. If a is 2cm and b is 1.5cm, then the result is 3.5cm (adding 1.5cm twice). If a is 1.5cm and b is 3cm, then the result is 5.0cm (adding 3cm twice).
