ArUco 2.5.4 (April-2022)

ArUco is designed as an accessible and minimal C++ library specially built for detecting Augmented Reality markers. ArUco is based on OpenCv exclusively.
It is an educational project to show student how to detect augmented reality markers.
The library relies on the use of coded markers. Each marker has an unique code indicated by the black and white colors in it.
The libary detect borders, and analyzes into the rectangular regions which of them are likely to be markers. Then, a decoding is performed and if the code is valid, it is considered that the rectangle is a marker.

An ArUco marker consists of a set of circles around a center point. To detect these markers, the markers are located and centered.
The detection is performed by an integer point. The center of the marker is located by a specific method in the point. Then, the circles are located in the center of the point. For this, the codes are sorted according to the value of the distance to the center, and in the interval of that value.
The method for locating the circle is recursive.

Please note that the following images have been deformed for the example.

A border is a rectangle in the image which matches at least 4 of the conditions stated in aruco. ( In order for an area to be a marker it must have at least 8 conditions match)

If a marker has only 5 conditions matched, it is considered that it is an invalid code. (see below)

Another property of borders is the size and location of the rectangle.
We say that it has a “left-top” if the top left corner of the rectangle (either of the red rectangle or the white one) is at left=0 and top=0.

It has a “right-bottom” if the bottom right corner of the rectangle (either of the red rectangle or the white one) is at left=width and top=height.

Also the position of the two rectangles must be similar:

The distance between the top left corners of the two rectangles must be less than 10% of the largest width of the image.

The distance between the bottom right corners of the two rectangles must be less than 10% of the largest height of the image.

This way of defining the markers helps the algorithm to have an efficient use of memory.

The algorithm checks if the distance between the two rectangles in order to check the similarity of their position is not larger than the rectangle size (if this is the case, there is no need to check for more conditions to determine if this is a valid marker).

The image below shows an example of an invalid marker. You can see that the two rectangles are not similar. This is because the position of the two rectangles is not similar.

Marker Location Annotation:

Marker location is a precise form of the annotation of the coordinates of the detected areas.

In order to annotate a detected marker area (in a fixed image), we add an arrow to the coordinates of the top left and bottom right corners of the rectangle. If the detected rectangle has a height of greater than 1, the top left corner of the rectangle is annotated at the image location whose left coordinate is the sum of the left coordinate
