when importing data from a dump file, you must ensure that the target collection is empty. when you perform the import operation, it cannot corrupt existing data in the target collection, but it can replace it.
the tool generates the dump file names for the complete dump file set based on a naming convention for full-migration dumps, i.e., the output of the tool -name parameter. the various potential naming formats are explained in the full-migration dump file naming conventions. for all the other import disc parameters, see import a dump file set into a target container .
you can import the following kinds of data:
- tables with the sql api
- documents with the sql api
- tables with the table api
- collections with the table api
- tables with the sql api that were created with identity migrations
- tables with the sql api that were created with migration tool migrations
- tables with the sql api that were created with the
exporttablecommand - tables with the sql api that were created in sql api with the
exporttablecommand and where the original table has an index with the nametable_identity_index(sql api only)
if youre reusing an existing collection, you can choose to import data to the collection as a single or a multi-partition collection. the sequential record importer supports importing to a single and a multi-partition azure cosmos container. for more information about partitioning data, see partitioning and scaling in azure cosmos db.
the sequential record importer supports both single-partition and multi-partition import based on both single or many arrays. the single array represents the data youre importing into a single partition, and the many array represents the data youre importing into multiple partitions. the tool automatically shards the data to multiple partitions based on the number of partitions specified in the import options screen. note that, when importing to a single partition, the tool only supports importing to non-cross-partition collections.
when single-partition import is enabled, the tool uses a hashed partition key (a 1:1 hash of the partition key and the partition key is serialized and the hash is generated and inserted as a partition key into the graph). this enables you to set the partition key using the source tab and hash-partitioning in data generation settings. this tool uses the hashing and partitioning strategy to minimize table scan times when importing to a single partition. the tool also maintains the partition key on the imported graph to minimize the chances of a partition resize and re-import of the same partition.
to import from a single azure cosmos container, enter the name of the collection to import data from. to import from more than one azure cosmos container, provide a regular expression to match one or more collection names (for example, collection01 collection02 collection03). you may optionally specify, or provide a file for, a query to both filter and shape the data that youre importing. the tool will only generate a single partition on the imported collection.
