Firewatch is a game created by Campo Santo. The original idea came from an employee at Campo Santo, a game studio in San Francisco, California that was started by former Vlambeer founders Rami Ismail and Jake Rodkin.

Inspired by Porpentine’s award winning ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ and the ‘Ghost Pirate’ sketch from the 2013 Mr. Show: The Magic Room, Pirate Hennessy wishes to greet you on Talk Like a Pirate Day (TALAPAIN) with a brief, two-minute pirate haiku (or two-minute-ish pirate haiku).

Firstly, for those who don’t know, ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ is a community event that takes place on September 19th, the anniversary of the birthday of Captain Kidd. It began in early 2004 by a comment on a comic book message board, but has since become an Internet phenomenon.

    Designed by Alex Goldman, who previously created games like Mafia 2, Prison Life is a cautionary tale of what can happen if you are punished unjustly. Claiming to be the “true story of Prison Life”, the game is littered with information about real prisoners who have been sentenced for offenses as minor as selling drugs to pay for their children’s education. “Just another prisoner”, a mysterious figure among the inmates, seems to be more than a spokesperson as he hands off videos of the prisoners’ pregnancies, even as they are incarcerated. The game is even more chilling as you go down the levels to find letters written by the prisoners as they wait for their court date. You play as one of the prisoners, who can be put into various cells with different hardships as you try to save your own life in the most extreme environment. Brilliant!

      A big problem for our real lives, and even for the video game Prison Life is that we, by ourselves, can not choose whether we move or not. If we want to move, we need to figure out how to move in the correct way. This has its consequences for our live and our games, therefore to control the proper way of moving in the game we have to be able to control the orientation of the character.
      Controlling the orientation of the character has to be both a skill and a real reflex. It takes time to play even a simple game to learn to control the right way of moving.
      The problem can only be solved if there is a reward after each movement we make. By the way, this is the principle we used in the game, where we want to come back and when the player has got to collect the bodies of the dead inmates.

      More than 400,000 people are confined in a U.S. jail every single day. And about three-quarters of them are behind bars for more than a year; after three years, about 70 percent of people in jail are still behind bars.

      Dianna Maffucci started writing down what she saw in a cellblock in a maximum-security prison six years ago. Through her newsletter and every writing gig she could find, she talked about the people she met, the messages they took away from their experiences, and how a brief period of incarceration could radically alter their lives.

      A smart, perceptive, and empathetic writer and reader, Maffucci’s work has been published in Harper’s, Gawker, and Seattle magazine. And so it should be no surprise that her own experiences inspired her to start a prison group that brings together people behind bars, their families, children, and friends who want to support them in their struggles and build a brighter future for those they love.

      Maffucci took me on a visit to WSP, where she met up with Daniel Steinhauer, a leader of the prison group, which is run in conjunction with Portland and Multnomah County jails. Here’s what we saw and heard on the inside:

      The Welcome to Prison initiative

      It’s been six years since Dianna Maffucci started writing Prison Life, a newsletter encouraging prisoners to make friends, write daily, and find hope within their assigned circumstances. Her words and actions have inspired many people, but most are not confined long term—most are people stuck in the system, trying to find a way to end their sentences.

      A few small groups of people quietly meet in prisons to share stories and perhaps share a meal. But the vast majority of prisoners, especially those like Maffucci, who have been arrested, jailed, and transferred to long-term confinement, are not in that kind of prison group or circle at the moment.

      “I think part of my instinct in starting this group was just because I know the kinds of people who are isolated, the ones who are like, ‘I can’t find anyone who will talk about this because I’m not in a jail cell yet or I’m not in the group yet,’” Maff
