The relatively recent trend of adding layers to Photoshop in order to organize your image began in 2004 and has expanded greatly since then. Learning how to use layers properly is a great tool in your arsenal. With layers, you can organize and group your different parts of an image so you can easily move parts around.
Adjusting the Content Channel
The first thing you’ll do when working with layers is make the layer you’re working on the foreground by adjusting the content channel.
Select the layer with the tool of your choice (an eyedropper will allow you to click on the layer and extract color information from the selection in the Photoshop toolbox).
Open the Levels palette.
Adjust the levels for each channel by clicking in the appropriate column, increasing the saturation and adjusting the white and black points of the color wheel.
Adjust the lightness and tone for each channel by clicking the Lightness and Tone adjustments buttons at the bottom left and right of the Levels palette.
In the Gradient Map, choose Gradient Overlay.
Adjust the colors and gradient mode at the top-right of the Gradient Map, then click the Add to Layers button at the bottom.
Photoshop makes it easy to add other layers to your image without having to leave the Levels palette. To add another layer to the current one you have selected, click the Add Layer button at the top of the Levels palette. A rectangle will appear on the top of your existing layer. You can rename the layer name by changing the label on the layer border.
After you change a layer’s name, the layer can be collapsed when you no longer need to see it. To do so, click the Layer icon to the left of the layer’s name in the layers palette.
When it’s been collapsed, you can change the layer’s fill color and opacity.
You can add an adjustment layer to the layer as well. To add an adjustment layer to a layer, click the Layer icon to the left of the layer’s name. Then click the Open button to the left of the Create a New Adjustment Layer option.
Adjusting the Exposure Channel
The second most important thing you’ll do when working with layers is adjust the Exposure Channel.
Place the cursor in the layers palette over the layer you wish to adjust. You’ll see a shadow icon in the layer’s gradient map.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 12.3 has a new camera RAW editor called Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that lets you process photos while still retaining the professional look. Adobe describes ACR as “a smarter RAW editor.” In fact, it’s an excellent RAW editor that can edit RAW images from cameras including Canon, Nikon and Sony (but not the generic Canon/Nikon/Sony format).
You can import over 400 RAW image formats and export more than 100 image formats. RAW image file can be edited as usual, and non-RAW files will display the changes in ACR.
Here’s how to use ACR.
Step 1: Open an image
Open an image by clicking File > Open or from the taskbar or menu bar. If you are using Elements 2018 or later, go to Edit > Open to open the image in the new editor interface.

Step 2: Use the standard Photoshop photo editor
If you have downloaded the standard Photoshop photo editor, you have everything you need to edit an image.

The menu bar has a new Shooting Settings menu where you can check the option to use the ACR settings.
The top toolbar has the tools that are useful to most photo editing.

The proposal was to provide people with an allowance of $1,400 a month which would be paid for through payroll deductions. It would only be for those with no income because they are living on their savings, are unemployed, are caring for someone else, or are disabled.
Sadly, the idea has been rejected.

Gates, facing a massive budget cut from Congress, has rejected the idea of a “Blue Zone” – a proposed subsidy of $1,400 a month for those living on savings, unemployment or who are caring for dependents – to help the unemployed in the recession. “I think that is probably the wrong approach to take. It will be politically unpalatable,” Gates told The Washington Post in an interview, acknowledging that he had battled with the President on the matter. “I don’t know what else to do.”
