The authors examined the immediate and short- and long-term effects of large and small bipaleal kinesiotaping on pain and neurologic function in subjects with persistent pain. Over 100 patients with persistent pain referred for physical therapy evaluation or treatment were placed in two groups: 75 received large bipaleal kinesiotaping, while 65 received small bipaleal kinesiotaping. Nonelastic tape was used, and both ankles were taped for 30-40 minutes per session. Kinesiotaping was applied over the anterior and posterior soles of the ankles, along the borders of both lower limbs, and over the dorsal surface of the foot. After a time, subjects were reassessed for motor control and sensory capabilities. Subjects’ pain levels and psychologic status were evaluated both pre- and posttreatment, and at 6 weeks and at 3 months. Variables were analyzed by Wilcoxon nonparametric test. Large bipaleal kinesiotaping produced a statistically significant improvement in the extent of limp, pain, and the overall level of dysfunction when compared to small bipaleal kinesiotaping. The large bipaleal kinesiotaping group showed a mean improvement of -0.66, -0.7, and -0.55 in limp, pain, and disability, respectively, compared to -0.29, -0.45, and -0.23 in the small group. The largest group showed significant improvement in sensory and motor function with an average improvement of -0.64 in sensory capability and an average improvement of -0.81 in motor function. Other variables measured failed to show a statistically significant difference. All eight siderophores and 11 pharmaceuticals were successfully separated in less than 20 min using a neutral pH background electrolyte. The number of two detected pharmaceuticals was increased from two to eight, using the new device. Abstract

Abstract This paper examines the coevolution of interaction networks and networks of regulatory interactions in bacteria. Using a formal approach, we show that in a broad class of models a network of regulatory interactions can evolve in which interacting proteins tend to be connected to one another. If the probability of binding to a particular interaction increases monotonically with the protein concentration of that interaction, then the maximum possible value of the out-degree of the network is maximized for intermediate values of the total concentration. Networks with this property are called functional networks. We study functional networks in the context of three specific models. In the first, protein expression is regulated only by transcription-translation feedback loops, and in the second, a second level of regulation is added, which uses a mechanism involving a Hill activation function. The third model includes binding to a quorum-sensing mechanism, and allows a multitude of competing positive and negative regulators. In all three cases, we show that the regulatory interactions are optimized under certain circumstances. We also consider a hypothetical model where a single protein regulates both mRNA production and degradation. We show that without assuming a particular form for the regulation of mRNA production or degradation, it is impossible to evolve a functional network, and that real-world evolution may therefore be incompatible with our formal analysis. This may have important implications for the evolutionary analysis of eukaryotic gene networks.
