Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who wrote a memo recommending that Comey be fired also participated in the meetings.
Justice Department officials told Politico that Barr and Rosenstein were still at the Justice Department when the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel was announced.
They added that Barr was not aware of the investigation into obstruction of justice by the Trump administration before joining the Justice Department.
Trump supporters have long claimed that Comey’s firing was unconstitutional, saying that Trump had the right to fire the FBI director. Former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Pete Hoekstra said there was no precedent that allowed the president to fire Comey before a special counsel was appointed.
But the move is now the subject of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.
It’s unclear how the Politico report relates to Mueller’s investigation.
Barr has denied any involvement in the firing of Comey, a claim that special counsel Mueller’s investigation could pry out of him.
Special counsel Mueller has the authority to investigate the roots of the Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible obstruction of justice by the Trump campaign.
