Over the last three years, Chrome has been working to empower web applications that want to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the browser. One such web application has been Photoshop. The idea of running software as complex as Photoshop directly in the browser would have been hard to imagine just a few years ago. However, by using various new web technologies, Adobe has now brought a public beta of Photoshop to the web.
From our research on the web we realized the technology and concepts of the web could be applied to enable the full experience of Photoshop. This started with Photoshop’s own.PSD files, which are in our new file format of.PWG. Then web app based file support (like storing local files from the web) was implemented in.PWG, and later JS was used to port and unify features like undo, layers, selections, and the many creative tools within Photoshop. In the web, we also remove both the browser’s canvas and file system, and instead we externalize the canvas and file system to the cloud.
