this is a dangerous game, because when we take on the big companies we don’t have a chance. we can’t win, so we only win if we don’t play. winning at simcity 4 deluxe is all about convincing simcity 4’s developers to take more than just a few minutes out of each week to fix their game. ea, et al, are not stupid. they’ll build simcity 4 again, only this time they’ll be prepared for a battle. they’ll sell the kind of game they’re not selling now; simcity 4 deluxe with a strongly-authenticated launch. once they have shut down this simcity 4, they can lift the authentication, and their simcity release will become the simcity the rest of us will purchase.
we’ve gone from $60 to $250 or more. i’m willing to bet that this game will be $20 before long. remember how insanely expensive simcity 2000 was before ea made it drop to $40? looking back, simcity 2000 was $40 when i bought it. i nearly waited until i knew it would be $30, the minimum price of snc!
in the first stage, ea is putting it out of its mind that simcity 4 isn’t going to sell. at this point, simcity is just a technique to sell their games. they know they’ll launch simcity 4, they know they’ll be selling a substantial number of copies, they know the games will sell, but they don’t care.
in the second stage, they feel people will buy their game and enjoy it, but they don’t, because people have bought the cheap and cheerful, ten dollar gametap simcity 2000 with its ever-present authentication to get the bug fixes. in simcity 4, it doesn’t happen. compounding that is the fact that the more fun you have with the game, the less you want to pay for it.
