dance music seems determined to lead by example, and its a pretty poor example when djs who are signed to labels with shoestring budgets cant produce any of the sort of dance music that mainstream labels are pushing. what happened was that over the past few years dance music has been taken over by big money over-produced edm with heavily distorted synths and samples. burials music is just what everyone else is doing, something thats just there.
this feels like a slightly jaded, older burial, and it works. the beats are usually slow, slow as molasses, but when its not, its a fun stop-start thing, a decent kick drum and annoying, laughably bright stabs and brass stabs in the mix. again, though, untrue has a slightly melancholy tone, and the beats are mostly slow, but the latter half of the record and particularly the closing track is this what i think it is? make it rather spacious and feel surprisingly uplifting. theres also a hint of r&b somewhere in the second half, a grooved and propulsive groove in the middle of many of these tracks. and burials vocals, while slightly grungier and deeper than his usual fare, are still pretty cool and above-average. he seems to feel real pain while singing, to create real terror, which is a pretty weird effect. its almost like he is singing twilight 2000, but instead of an upbeat chorale sound, hes singing a very weird kind of post-punk stuff. its a bit like the electro nightingale is not a party animal that just happens to be singing at parties, it actually likes parties and enjoys them, and wants to go to them as an entity in its own right. you go to parties because you enjoy being in a party, but you do so because youre not just a party animal, youre actually a party animal. its cool. again, burials crowd is way more laid back than burial, but its still a great album, despite the fairly electronic leanings of its second half.
