Another major task in the mod was to cover up the repetitive, low quality textures of the original game and add new, higher resolution textures to every object. Because the game had recently been released when this project was started, Albert was limited to a certain style of replacing textures. He knew of a great texture pack for Poser called Parasite that had a similar style to what he wanted to do for the game. Using that as a base, he wrote a script in January 2009 to take what the original game had done and improve on it by replacing with high-res textures, adding lighting, and improving the quality of the sprites. The script automatically took into account all the different models and damage levels in the game to create a variety of new textures for all of them (some of which were completely new models).
The new textures were a leap forward from the original game. They were not just sharper and better-looking, but they were also unique compared to the vanilla game. The modding for the game was completed in March of 2009. It was at this point that Albert finally handed the project off to Cristian, a Colombian-based programmer he was familiar with. Unfortunately, Cristian (like Albert) was a web developer and could only work on this during the weekends; so, it took over a year for the game to finally come to a point where it could be released.
Resident Evil 4 is one of my all time favorite games, and its been sitting on my shelves for years. As a result, I’m very excited to finally get my hands on a proper remake. I hope I’m not disappointed!
I will try to make a screenshot of this and the final result one day. In the meantime, you can try searching for something called GOG.com. In my case I have every GOG have every Resident Evil game, except of course the old school stuff like RE2,3 and 4 and all the probate games.
After Albert finished fixing the tiles he then had to find something that matched the aesthetic of the original in the first place. He ended up using the cloudycloudy which is a painting tool from Spain that has many features that can be found very easily. In addition to that, there are some cake texture on the web that you can use as well. So he finally ended up with an abstract and visual look that he was very happy with.
The way this patch works is twofold: you must update the textures during game initialization with the -txupdate option of texmod and you must perform a clean reset of the game for this to take effect. This is not a problem since both are simple tasks. In order to do the latter, simply run the game with -cgamm if you have the latest version of the game. I’m sorry for the inconvenience you’re going to have to face as this won’t be the last modded Resident Evil release but I hope it will be the last patch for some time.
