spider-man: web of shadows is a really solid, if unspectacular, game. as such, it’s worth a look for anyone that can tolerate its less-than-perfect control scheme. as a spider-man fan, you can’t deny the amount of fun you’ll have running across rooftops and seeing any number of classic web of shadows scenes. it’s just not for everyone, though.
spider-man’s mechanics are some of the most innovative i’ve ever seen in the genre. the first few missions are a bit slow in pace, but the unadulterated freedom of web-slinging on the city side of things is just breathtaking. the game’s world-traveling, parkour-based missions are taken to an astounding new level. while you’ll have to wait to see just how all of this works, it’s safe to assume that it’s all been done before, but never in the way that you’ll see it in spider-man. spider-man is one of the best platform games out there, providing a solid story (though it’s not the most original), an excellent control scheme, and amazing physics, and i highly recommend it to anybody who’s interested in the genre.

spider-man also has a few moves that are worth mentioning. the wall-running special moves is probably the best, as it allows players to dash around walls and climb up buildings with ease. there are also a couple of really cool special attacks that can really add some excitement to an enemy encounter, like web-spinning to catch enemies and throwing a spider web up to see where you can web-sling to reach. the ai also does a pretty good job of predicting your movement, and can trick you into the wrong position.
there is not a single redeeming feature in the game. spider-man cannot shoot webs from a distance, neither can you manually aim, so the automatic web shooting is the only form of shooting to try. he has the ability to leap, which is great in open-world games, and that is the only way to leap over enemies. the combat, gameplay, graphics, audio, textures, lighting, frame rate and everything else just sucks.
eventually, you are rewarded with the pleasure of opening the game’s secret area, which is sort of a stage that is loaded when players complete a special mission. however, the secret area has the same set of missions and is of no use to other players. it is also very easy to get into the area, and the transitions between stages are so slow that you will likely spend more time browsing through menus than running across the level.
