graphics-wise, superfrog is an absolute beauty. the game is amazingly well-compressed, with only a small fraction of the game taking up over 2 gig of space on my hard drive. the game looks great, with an retro style that is absolutely gorgeous, and the movement of superfrogs legs is just as incredible as the rest of his body. there is a huge amount of detail in the levels, with grass, trees, bushes, clouds, grasshoppers, crickets, butterflies, and even a few snakes. all of these things have very clear, crisp textures, and the game overall looks fantastic. what really makes the game shine though, is the presentation of the levels. each stage is set to a retro soundtrack, with a bright and upbeat tune. the quality of the music is also absolutely stunning, and is far more memorable than most music that i have heard in recent years. the sound effects are as good as the graphics, and are pretty much as good as they could be. and so well worth a mention is the in-game menu. the menus for the original amiga game and the hd remake are identical, and theyre absolutely gorgeous. i really liked the original amiga menus, and i liked the hd menus as well. there is plenty of space for you to navigate through, and the graphics for the menus are fantastic, with fantastic contrast. for a game that is so often criticised for its poor graphics, superfrog is actually one of the best looking games i have seen in a long time.
this is where the original amiga version of superfrog comes in very handy. not only does it have all the graphics, it also has the menus, the audio, the end credits, and it even has a code section where the intro to the game was found. and its really that code that makes the game so great.
one of the things that makes superfrog hd so frustrating is that theres no real way to get a running start. if youre not going to be in any danger of smacking into the pit before you jump, or youre not in any danger of running out of lives or potions, and youre only going to be jumping a few spaces over a pit, then there is no way to get a running start. but if youre going to be jumping a great deal of distance, or if theres a short pit in front of you, youre in danger of smacking into it if you jump too early. and if youre not jumping a great deal of distance over a pit, then its very difficult to jump in time to hit the button that will make you jump over the pit. youll need to get used to the timing, and youll have to be a little patient if you want to play through the game. and thats not a problem for some people, but for others, its just a huge inconvenience.
now before i go on any further, i should explain how you play superfrog, which is that you jump with the arrow keys, and you can freely jump over spikes and any obstacles you encounter. in the beginning, youll be able to jump high, but as you progress through the levels your leaps get smaller, and smaller, and smaller, until youll be able to jump only a few inches. you must collect coins and gems while jumping to pass levels, and as you collect these youll be rewarded with power-ups that increase the height of your jumps. this is the only gameplay mechanic that you need to be aware of, as there are no enemies, or power-ups that help you out.
as youll soon see, the game is rather simplistic. one thing i really liked though was that the controls are very responsive, and very responsive indeed. in fact, the game is quite addictive, and i found myself jumping around all over the place just to find more gems. as the game progresses youll be able to jump even higher, as you collect better items, such as a special cape that makes you float in the air. the game is over when you fail to save the princess, or when the princess hasnt yet kissed you. its quite easy to get the game over, but its not really a problem as theres plenty more content to explore. you can explore a total of twelve worlds with four worlds being available at any one time.
