ezmix 2 is designed to be used with a spectrum analyser, but also comes with a set of presets optimised for tracking. you can use a standard vu meter to find out what you’re hearing and to check for clicks, which can then be ironed out. but you can use ezmix 2 to also choose a set of simple eqs, more complex eqs or one of the 9 useful effects, and fine-tune these with the full range of controls. you can also try it out with a mixer and see if it works with your set-up. even though it’s designed for the track, there’s nothing to stop you using it for a final mix, even if it takes a while to set up.
and that’s why this is such an interesting and potentially useful plug-in — because it can do everything! as a plug-in, the interface is easy to use, the presets cover a lot of ground, and you can tweak them however you want. if you use an audio editor to adjust the effects, you can make the adjustments via the audio editor’s gui, but if you prefer, you can make adjustments via the vu meters or the spectrum analyser. i’m not a professional engineer, but i’ve found ezmix 2 to be a very good starting point. it’s a plug-in that i’d happily recommend to beginners, and i’d also think it’s a good plug-in for an experienced professional to use on a quickie mix, or on a live recording.
i was so taken with the concept and ezmix 2, i’ve been using it in a number of ways, and it’s inspired me to look at my own patchwork of plug-ins in a new way. i’m only just beginning to explore the creative options that are out there, but i’m already impressed, and it’s a very cool plug-in.
with the addition of the various expanded presets, there’s now more than enough content to make ezmix 2 a worthwhile addition to your mixing arsenal. however, you’re still limited to a fairly small number of available presets. since the source material you’re working with is already stored in the browser, it’s possible to save your own versions, which can then be used to restore the original settings of the original sounds.
there’s a fair bit of editing you can do on the presets. for example, you can apply processing directly to each individual effect. if you’re familiar with the original ezmix, you’ll know that you can work in edit mode and then adjust the parameters, but you can’t simply edit the value of a single parameter. rather, you have to edit the entire preset and rebuild it from scratch. with ezmix 2, you can adjust the parameter directly, and even if you accidentally destroy the preset, you can easily rebuild it. this means you can get your hands on the original settings of the effect in edit mode and work with them in much more detail.
with ezmix 2, you get the same user-friendly interface as the original ezmix. this means that you can simply select your preset and drag it to your track or the output. you can also move it around in the browser, and if you don’t like the sound of a particular preset, you can edit it yourself. ezmix 2 also makes it very easy to add and modify effects. there’s also an option to save presets directly to your user presets folder in your ezmix 2 installation folder.
ezmix 2 is a viable solution for any producer and is a must for those looking to get up to speed quickly on the top vst plug-in technology of the moment. it’s a delight to listen to, whether using presets, or building your own rigs.
