in a way, joker feels like a musical. but instead of celebrating the music, the musical recounts the downfall of the joker. after all the joker is, essentially, a demon, and a demon is by definition doomed. and this is what makes joker so special. im not sure that there are too many films that are as well-written, well-directed, and well-acted as this one. a true masterpiece that deserves to win best picture.
im not sure that joker will win best picture at the oscars, but i do think it will win at least one oscar. its a magical, exhilarating film, and i know that i wont be able to watch joker again without thinking about it. its also the type of film that will make you want to see more films like it, so i think joker is a movie that will appeal to the masses. while joker, like the irishman and once upon a time.. in hollywood, is another great film from quentin tarantino, i feel that this is the last of his big films he will make. if he doesnt get a chance to make another film like joker in his career, id like to see him make a film that is even more ambitious, and more personal.

joaquin phoenix as the clown prince of crime should have been a slam dunk, but he was stuck with an underwhelming lead role and the critically panned joker origin story from warner bros. comics writer mark hamill. no director wanted to tackle a crime movie, so phoenix’s departure just added fuel to the fire. and then there’s the dark knight, who had to be the worst batman in a generation, with christian bale’s performance probably the most divisive one in the series. his absence didn’t exactly help.
but one guy remained standing, and that was joaquin phoenix. a crazy train of a leading man, phoenix has been testing the waters of playing a complete wreck for years, and his ability to bring the laughs and pain to the screen made phoenix the ultimate joker. and that, in itself, is a kind of redemption, right?
the joker movies have been a kind of rampage of insanity, a dark take on the superhero genre whose violence and excessive display of emotion isn’t exactly for everyone. but in the hands of phoenix and phillips, it becomes something different, a genre-bending lunacy that plays like a horror movie — with an ending that’s not only shocking, but life-affirming.
gothams most iconic clown is probably the most controversial character in comic book history. the joker has been the subject of various interpretations in different media and continues to be a source of popular debate. he is a product of the popular culture, so the history of the joker is often tied to the development of batman and other characters.
