The original release of Delphi for.NET was released as a well-organized package of components. Within each component, you could just browse through the interfaces and pick the one that appealed. However, in the latest release, this classic approach has been dropped. This is the result of a lot of effort at re-design. The ultimate ambition is to present components in an API-driven environment. In the case of Delphi for.NET, the API is the Windows API.
Sometimes Delphi developers love the simplicity, cleanliness and low cost of VB.NET, and use that library with.NET applications. But the benefits of that approach come with drawbacks. VB.NET does not have a true object model, which often leads to the need for dirty hacks to create “VB.NET objects”. Since it is a compiler, everything must be complied at the application level. Thus a JIT (Just in Time) compiler must be added to the mix to compile code at run time. Performance gains can be achieved with this approach, but it can also lead to other problems.
The VCL.NET API is also not well documented and does not provide appropriate information for developers. I can confirm this information. We have replaced hundreds of VCL.NET controls in Delphi with their.NET counterparts, and in many cases we have found that developers are having trouble converting them. Many times we have had problems with interaction between controls on the same form. Sometimes this is not an option, so the only solution is to convert controls in VB.NET. This also costs money in terms of time.
VCL.NET also does not support AJAX, which means Delphi developers can make UI changes without the need to save and reload the form. I hate this approach and the only workarounds I have found so far are through objects that copy or stream the content. This has resulted in a need to regularly build an instance of these objects on the server. Or, the developer is stuck at the same place he or she was before, and must re-work the UI.
